The land of fire and ice has probably climbed to the top of every bucket list when it comes to travellers and explorers. But in recent years, couples have been also dreaming about getting married in Iceland and it is not hard to see why. Iceland is simply extraordinary! Imagine tying the knot with a backdrop of breathtaking landscapes such as majestic waterfalls, mountains, towering glaciers, or dreamy green fields; maybe saying ‘I do’ on a black sand beach with crystal ice sprinkled like diamonds. You will never run out of gorgeous scapes to tailor your special day. Plus, you can enjoy a mini-honeymoon in a blue lagoon with geothermal waters, even visit up close active volcanoes, and do countless other activities together.
However, let’s first make you an expert on the matter and give you all the information on how to elope in Iceland and get started to plan the most incredible elopement ever! I'm here to lend a helping hand and make your dream Iceland elopement a reality. I want to assist you every step of the way, ensuring that your special day is truly unforgettable.
Elopements are all about making your wedding day special, intimate, and personal. With the rising pressure of planning a grand affair, couples simply choose to stray away and go for something more intimate… something that would be completely tailored to their personalities. That being said, they often choose a unique destination where they can make their ceremony completely their own without the hustle and bustle of traditional nuptials.
If you have landed here then you must be dreaming about getting married in Iceland and are longing to have your adventurous souls unified. What I can say with confidence is that these lands will completely spellbind you! Finding a unique destination and awe-inspiring backdrop is just a stone’s throw away. Of course, there might be hiking involved and getting a bit dirty, but most exceptional places are also easily accessible thanks to the Golden Circle road that stretches across the whole island! Amazing right?
Naturally, as an experienced Iceland intimate wedding and elopement photographer, I have a whole array of places to share with you besides the popular spots, and help you curate a one-of-a-kind elopement! But in short, you will never run out of scenery as it is one of the most beautiful countries for an adventure wedding. Plus the food is amazing - don’t get me started on the scrumptious seafood. Also, it would be worthy to mention that you can see the Northern Lights from here, but they are only visible during winter. Iceland is truly one of the most breathtaking places in the world to elope.
That being said, let’s talk about the seasons.
Without a doubt, Summer is the most popular time for getting married in Iceland. The weather is warm and there are more opportunities when it comes to choosing locations. However, from June to August, it is packed with tourists. But at the same time, because there are a lot of places to have your ceremony, this won’t be a great issue. If you are looking for a less crowded period, then Spring will be perfect. The weather is also warm enough to tailor a magical elopement. I would definitely recommend this season if you are planning on visiting the hot springs. Fall is a great time to tie the knot as well. The crowds are thinning, you will have your privacy and it is still pleasant. However, as Iceland is known for its unexpected weather changes, I would advise bringing a raincoat or jacket! Winter is for those that are truly adventurous at heart. If you want to see the northern lights, this is the best period. Plus, there are small unique churches for a charming elopement and various venues to make your day truly memorable.
For me, as an Iceland elopement photographer, the location plays a great role in framing your love story. But like I said, finding a picturesque backdrop here is an easy feat! Whether it comes to tying the knot in one of the national parks, the country’s iconic black sand beaches, next to a waterfall, or maybe an ice cave, it will undoubtedly be extraordinary. Here are 10 of my favourite spots for an Iceland elopement:
Found on the southern coast, it is one of the most amazing places to elope in Iceland! Not only will it provide gorgeous contrast for your photos but the beach also features basalt formations and a stone wall that wonderfully shapes into a cave.New Paragraph
Blue hot water, white silica crystal, steam, moss and lava. Home to one of the 25 wonders of the world,
Blue Lagoon Iceland is a place where the powers of geothermal seawater create an incredible landscape. Getting married at the Blue Lagoon is just out of this world!
The fact I am listing these two majestic waterfalls together is because they are only 30 min apart. That means more magnificent wedding photos for your elopement ceremony! It is no secret that these two are some of the most popular spots and the reason why wild romantic souls choose to elope in Iceland.
The Búðakirkja Church, a charming wooden structure, stands proudly on the southern coast of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. Positioned at the point where road 54 gracefully veers from the sea towards the majestic mountains, it captivates with its vibrant hues. Against the stunning backdrop of the Snæfellsjökull glacier, the church's striking color scheme, showcased by its white vestry, this makes it the most photographed church in Iceland.
Írárfoss, although not widely recognized, is a captivating waterfall nestled along Iceland's south coast that is certainly worth exploring. Its serene and picturesque setting serves as the ideal backdrop for an enchanting and unforgettable wedding ceremony.
If you are looking for some coastal magic, these cliffs are going to awe-inspire you! Plus, the arch-shaped cliff is one of the most scenic spots in Iceland. This is another location that rates high on the popular scale, so it's always crowded during the summer period.
You may recognize this mountain as it is one of the most commonly photographed places in the country. Not only it has a unique shape but it also features a beautiful waterfall - Kirkjufellsfoss. Also, it's a famous Games of Thrones location! The seascape graces you with its vast horizon while you listen to the waterfall’s graceful flow.
Imagine a beautiful lake that has been shaped by melting glaciers and icebergs floating in it. You can already envision how this would be an extraordinary experience if you are getting married in Iceland. I mean, can you imagine a better place to get married? I can't.
Just by the Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, you can find the Diamond Beach that has black sands and magical pieces of ice just scattered through it. It is one of the most surreal landscapes you will behold as you elope in Iceland!
Þórsmörk is a secluded oasis nestled between Tindfjallajökull, Eyjafjallajökull, and Mýrdalsjökull glaciers. This diverse landscape unites lush valleys with rugged glaciers, snowy peaks, and volcanic terrain. Glacial rivers crisscross the area, enhancing the dynamic scenery. Named after the Norse god Thor, this remote haven appeals to nature enthusiasts, hikers, and those seeking a genuine connection with the land.
This national park has it all. If you aim to have versatility for your photos, as an Iceland elopement photographer I definitely recommend this destination. It has dried magma fields, mountain peaks, a lake (Thingvallavatn - Lake of the Fields), and glacial springs. Plus, it is very important for Icelandic culture so you will be having an adventure entwined with history.
The golden waterfall is accessible by a 2-hour drive from Reykjavik and it is famous for its massive water flow. The magical moment here is that because of so much water, there is a certain mist that will look ethereal for your wedding photos!
A gorgeous valley stretches in front of you as you tie the knot in the canyon. This location is a dream for wanderlust romantics that love some privacy. It provides both an adventure and intimacy for your special day, backed with gorgeous views!
As an experienced Iceland wedding photographer, I can safely say that the weather can be unpredictable, so always remember to bring a jacket. Furthermore, your footwear must be comfy. You might need to hike, so opting for hiking shoes is highly recommended. You can bring designer shoes, and just wear them for the ceremony. Also, you will need mobility, so avoid dress designs that limit your walk. For the colder months, wearing nude thermal leggings under your dress and pants is a lifesaver! Trust me, you want to be warm and comfy because if you aren’t, you won’t enjoy it completely and that will be shown in the photos. Not to forget, warm coats are always welcome!
Since elopements and destination weddings have been on the rise in Iceland, there are a plethora of talented and skilled vendors for you to hire. From makeup artists, hairstylists, florists, videography and other local vendors, you won’t have to look long to discover your perfect match. Plus, I work with many professionals, so I can recommend to you those that would be aligned with your style. You won’t have to worry about having your memories framed because I would be honored to do that for you!
I know, paperwork is dull and can be quite overwhelming but it is necessary. The good news is that for most locations mentioned above you won’t need a special permit. Still, you will need to take care of the documentation needed for your marriage to be legally binding. Of course, you will have to have a celebrant, an officiant, or a priest that will perform the ceremony. At the same time, this person will also help you with organizing all the papers.
The most important thing is to be at least 18 years old. Also, if you have been previously married, you will have to provide documentation that now you are divorced. Keep in mind that the documents need to be presented as originals and the only copy you can bring is a verified translation if it isn’t in English or any of the Scandinavian languages. As for the timing, they have to be submitted at least 3 weeks before your ceremony. You can also email them prior and simply give the originals no later than 5 days before the date. There is a shortcut too - you can hire a planner and have them organize everything without breaking a sweat!
Citizens of Denmark, Sweden, Norway or Finland are required to present a certificate from their country, to confirm that there are no impediments to marriage. "Hjónavígsluskýrsla" and passports must be presented, but the other documents mentioned are not required. A resident of Denmark, Sweden, Norway or Finland may in the same way submit such a certificate issued in their country of residence, confirming that there are no impediments to marriage.
In Sweden the required document is "Intyg hindersprövning" or "Marriage licence" issued by "Skatteverket".
In Denmark the required document is "Ægteskabsattest" or "Certificate of marital status" issued by "Kommunen".
In Norway the required document is "Prøvingsattest" or "Certificate of no impediment to marriage" issued by "Folkeregister"
In Finland the required document is "Intyget över prövning av hinder"/"Certificate of the examination of the impediments to marriage" issued by "maistraatti / magistraten"
You will be able to get your certificate after the ceremony from the National Registry, Þjóðskrá. It can be in English, so no need to worry about translating it.
